House Rules Games-Dallas, Texas

Updated: Sep 5, 2022

.

Dallas, Texas- House Rules Games is a game store nestled in the incredibly walkable and boutique central area of Dallas uniquely named ‘Bishop Arts’. The first thing distinguishing HRG from other board game stores is how it complements the other small boutique stores and their unique looks. Some game stores can be daunting to enter and feel like a used book store in the size of games for sale. HRG has a curated selection of games that appeal to walk-ins and collectors alike.

Another reason to visit HRG is to meet one of the owners, Stephen. Stephen understands that running a board game store is 10% having games and 90% talking to customers and steering them in the right direction. I have rarely had a store owner recommend me NOT buy a specific game when talking about it. I appreciate Stephen’s honest suggestions even when it might not be the biggest sale.

Conclusion/ Grading

  1. Selection (A+)- HRG has a great selection from new kickstarters to pub games. Additionally, there is a great selection of RPGs and TCGs but no singles.

  2. Layout (A+)- While HRG is a small store, it fits with the atmosphere of Bishop Arts and because of that, it is inviting and the game displays feel original enough that it could be considered a unique, boutique board game store just like the eclectic stores surrounding it.

  3. Location (B)- While the store is in a great shopping district- parking is not ideal and it is a bit far from the stores in the center of the district so it can easily be missed if you don’t park near it.

While I wish the store to have a bit more space for a demo table, I only say that because I think it would help Stephen sell more games since he already does a great job helping people visualize what they would enjoy about specific games. I definitely recommend this store if you are in Dallas.
